Engineering Experience

Hardware

Microprocessor / microcontroller based system design and development.

Z80, 64180, 8086 microprocessors, 8051 derivative microcontrollers and Siemens C167 / ST10, 16-bit microcontroller.

Controller Area Network (CAN) design and implementation.

PC interface card design and development. Multiple microprocessor intelligent communications cards and isolated analogue and digital I/O cards.

Other hardware experience includes the use of PALs, E2PROMs (parallel and serial), FLASH, RTCs, analogue to digital and digital to analogue converters, signal isolation (analogue and digital), LCD displays (with temperature compensation), LCD controller ICs, microprocessor protection circuits and thermocouple temperature measurement.

Fault finding in both development and production hardware.

Software

Modula-2: Ten years experience. Formerly used on a day to day basis in the writing of PC based control systems and front end graphical user interface packages running under DOS. Typical packages used in a central control room for the remote control and monitoring of industrial plant. Currently used to maintain existing products.

C code : Six years experience in writing PC based control applications.

Five years experience writing embedded C code primarily for the 16-bit Siemens C167.

Communications protocols to interface with customers products, e.g. Modbus, proprietary PLC manufacturers protocols.

Assembly Language : Used to a lesser extent in the maintenance of existing control equipment.

All software written on PC platforms.

Most current operating system in use, Window NT4.

Site commissioning

Large amount of site commissioning over the past 8 years including commissioning in the UK, Europe, South Africa, USA and the Far East.

12 months full time on site commissioning in Taiwan on a large power plant project incorporating all aspects of the project, from software, to inspection and quality assessments . On site as company representative and site commissioning engineer of Castlet. Main task was installation, commissioning and debugging of new control system installed on four 600MW units. Complete system, per unit, incorporated three graphical user interfaces, networks, PLCs, Castlet controllers and various sundry items.

PLCs and Interfacing

No longer undertaken by myself for approximately 3 years. Included for reference.

Design and programming of large and small systems based on Allen Bradley, Square D, MODICON, CEGELEC GEM80 and Siemens PLCs. Designs included panel design, circuit diagrams, interconnection detailing, test documentation etc. Software for all types of PLCs was written using ladder logic.

Use of Allen Bradley Panelview and Controlview data monitoring and control packages.

Use of Allen Bradley Interchange software tools to directly interface PC based applications with PLCs.
