THE TECHNICAL SERVICE CENTER (FCO)
The FC0 Department is responsible for receiving RMA (Return Material Authorization) products that comes from the different vendors as well as end users. All products that are processed by the ACER group of companies ranging from CD-ROM’s, CD-RW’s and DVD-ROM’s (Storage), Scanners (Imaging), Monitors, (CRT), Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Cellular phones (GSM) goes to each responsible section for repair. Each of the section have 24 hours TAT (Turn Around Time) to fix and return the product to our customers. Customers and end users include users from all over Taiwan and countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mainland China, United States of America and Europe.
JOB DESCRIPTION
(As Repair Engineer)
1. Troubleshoot different storage devices such as CD-ROM’s, CD-RW’s and DVD ROM’s. These devices come in different models, specifications and speeds. Thus, each model comes with a different set of problems and defects and requires different solutions.
2. Repair RMA goods manually with the use of the Multimeter and Oscilloscope. CD-ROM drives have an average number of 70 drives for per RMA. Each RMA must be fixed within the next 24 hours RMA and made ready for shipping to customers within the shortest possible time.
3. Locate the exact fault of the device and repair it while ensuring that no other components will be wasted. Components that are suspected for creating problems must be removed and replaced. Perform series of tests using diagnostic software that checks the different specifications of each and every drive. The diagnostic software utilized will perform the following checks :
Transfer Rate or the Revolution Per Minute (RPM),
1/3 Stroke - The movement of the head (lens)
Maximum Access - measures the amount of time the heads takes to read data from one track to another.
Random Seek - measures the ability of the drive to move in and out of the of the surface of the disk ensuring that the head lands on the track accurately and precisely.
Audio Test - checks the ability of the drive to produce an audible sound to the speaker. Tray In/Out - checks the loading mechanism of the drive.
4. Be able provide details regarding the defective components that have been located and which commonly affects the drives. Provide information on its fail rates as well information on why it is always affected. The information is then forwarded to the Research and Development department for analysis. Discuss and provide immediate solutions for possible causes of component failures.
JOB DESCRIPTION
(As Production Technician)
Main Responsibility
Maintain and ensure that a defect free handset passes on from the first to the last station within the production line.
The assembly process
A PCB (Printed Circuit Board) originates from the first station known as the T-Line Station. This station handles finished PCB for software download before it is passed on to the next station.
Placement of metal dome for the keypad.
Placement of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) module.
Placement of the microphone, buzzer cap, and vibrator and volume key.
Ensure that LED on the PCB is functioning properly.
Placement of the lower case and the upper case. Inspect the unit for any fibers caught on the LCD module.
Ensure that the battery charging function of the cellular phone is working.
Conduct over all quality check on the handset. Properly utilize a jig machine to check the buzzer, microphone and the LCD as well as the vibrator. The In/Out connector is also checked on this machine to ensure that the battery charging function and the earphone connectors are operating properly.
The jig machine is equipped with sophisticated machines such as the Decibel measurement device that accurately checks the output of the buzzer.
Perform the Function Test on the handset.
The Function Test is responsible for checking the cellular phone intensively and utilizes the Hewlett Packard and Agilent Communication Test Sets. Customized programs written by in house MIS personnel works hand in hand in checking the different function of the handset. Mobile phones are checked if they can properly send and receive signals on either GSM or DCS. If there are any errors on the handset, codes will automatically be generated for each and every error for troubleshooters to identify and isolate the area that is generating the error code. Most PCBs are classified into three major parts namely;
RF (Radio Frequency), Baseband and Mainboard. This partition helps allows easy location of the defective components.
After performing the Function Test, the cellular phone is passed on to another operator who will be responsible for checking the Keypad, Buzzer and Microphone. Finally, the handset is passed on to another operator who will perform the Wireless Test on the handset.
The Wireless Test uses a Test SIM card to check if a handset is capable of transmitting signals in the TX Mode (Transmit) and RX Mode (Receive) properly without any interference. Error Codes as well are used to differentiate one error to the others,
Document every error code generated during the operations. Appraise the common failures or codes encountered and provide an adequate remedy for common failure. If the error cannot be remedied, immediately inform the Quality Assurance (QA) Engineers and the Surface Mounted Technology (SMT) Personnel. External components such as Buzzer, Microphones and Keypads are referred to the QA personnel. While Internal components are mainly referred to the SMT personnel.
Replacement of External components
Problem : Lack of buzzer tone
Solution : Inspect and replacement of buzzer component
Problem : Microphone
Solution : Inspect and replacement of microphone component
Problem : Vibrator
Solution : Inspect and replacement of vibrator component
Problem : Non-flexible/ tight keypad keys
Solution : Inspect and replacement of the keypad or metal dome.
Problem : Audio and Speaker components
Solution : Inspect and replacement of audio and speaker components.
Problem : LCD module
Solution : Inspect and replacement of audio and speaker components.
Replacement of partially defective (substandard) components
Problem : Occurrence of abnormalities during handset performance of TX/RX.
Solution : Refine the RF circuitry. Test the handset rigidly. Each and every time a handset is opened or whenever an internal component has been replaced, the handset must pass the final Function Test before the handset can be considered free of defects and fully functional.
Common problems
Problem : Poor transmission and reception of signals,
Solution : The RF and Baseband circuitry must be checked. Ensure that the Antenna is in proper contact with the PCB. The Antenna Switch must also be checked if it is opened or if it is shorted.
Problem : Any problem concerning the QFP (Quad Flat Package) which has 300 or more pins and BGA (Ball Grid Array) components.
Solution : Replace CPU, the Flash (ROM) as well as the SRAM. Due to the highly sensitive nature of these components of the PCB, they must be handled with extreme care and caution. If any of these components fail, then the handset is useless.
Problem : Replacement of semi-conductor components (also known as micro-components).
Solution : Repair with a heat gun with the temperature set between 300 to 450 degree’s Celsius. Tweezers are used to keep them on their place and to hold them steady while cooling the lead. The actual value of the micro-components are checked using a standard multi-meter device. On other occasions, a Spectrum Analyzer device or a standard Oscilloscope machine is used.
Replacement of sophisticated components or devices
After replacing the components, recalibrate the handset in order to restore the original software and hardware version specifically designed for each model of handsets. Models include the Motorola Talkabout (D65/D70); the company’s own handset design known as ACER V700/V750 (D68).
When recalibrating and or re-downloading, the Hewlett Packard HP8922 Communications Test Set Machines are used. These machines are controlled by a software written by in-house MIS personnel and is meant for use during the calibrating and re-downloading process whenever handsets fails to power-on or when other difficult problems are encountered.
