Performed 3D modeling in the effects of topographic changes to geomagnetic fields during the Miyake-jima volcano eruption in August 2000. Conducted statistical factor analysis of geomagnetic data series obtained within the Izu Peninsula over the last 10 years at 11 observation stations to clarify questions concerning the presence of precursory signals that may appear before and in time of a seismic activity. Published and presented research at numerous scientific conferences.
Institute of Geophysics, Russian Academy of Science, June 1995 - April 2000
100 Amundsen Street, Ekaterinburg, 620016, Russia
Scientist
Developed and programmed numerical algorithms and software for geomagnetic field modeling. Acquired expertise in vector integral equation approaches for potential fields modeling and computational geometry methodology including triangulation and point locations in 2D planes. Developed 2D and 3D algorithms and computer programs for magnetic and gravity field calculations for bodies with complicated inner structures that produced models of any geological environment with arbitrary distributed properties. Created new algorithms for 2D geomagnetic field modeling that divides cross sections of a body into triangles providing outlines of arbitrary body contours, taking into account complicated magnetic inhomogeneities and demagnetization effects. Algorithm allowed rapidly to fit a model and was utilized for highly magnetized bodies with magnetic susceptibility up to 100 SI. Utilizing complex programming created algorithms that allows model construction with unlimited number of bodies depending on the physical memory of a computer, has a graphical user interface that provides the interpreter the possibility to easily construct and edit a model, simultaneously calculates gravity anomalies, permits module structures that provide options to add computational blocks that may take into account other potential fields, and constructs a complex geophysical model that fits not only in magnetic but also in gravity fields. The algorithms permit 3D gravity calculations and magnetic model utilizing vector integral equation approaches and also divide model bodies into rectangular prisms that take into account inhomodenetis in density and magnetic susceptibility. Results were presented at scientific conferences and published. Programming is used in various research projects at the Institute of Geophysics and for teaching students at the Ekaterinburg Mining Academy.
