Dear Director,

My name is Sara Rodrigues, I am 19 years old, and I am an accredited TESOL English Teacher. I plan on arriving in Taiwan on May 9th and am looking for a job position. I am traveling with two friends who are also teachers and are also looking for work. We are looking for an opportunity to work together at the same school. I have attached my resume and would be very honoured to hear from you. Thank you very much for you time in reading my resume and your considerations.

EDUCATION

I am a qualified English Teacher through TESOL. I have successfully completed my high school education with district honours at Valleyview Secondary School, which is one of the most respected and honourable high schools of Kamloops, BC. I have also completed one full year of a four-year degree program in Business Administration at the University College of the Cariboo, which is also a highly academic university in British Columbia, Canada.

EXPERIENCE

Private Math and English Tutor:
I have experience tutoring elementary and high school students in specific areas of mathematics and English. When tutoring I would work with a students one at a time, giving my students direct attention in their troubled area. I would help my students with questions they were having troubles with while also increasing their confidence level. Through this I was able to help students who struggled in the classroom keep up with their peers and curriculum. Because of this experience I developed a passion for teaching and helping students with learning disabilities to adapt to classroom situations.

Child Care Worker:
For many years I have worked for other families taking care of their children. My duties included helping with their schoolwork, preparing their meals, playing games and making sure they were on time for after school activities. Through this experience I learned the importance of being a role model, the value of communication and how one must create trust between a babysitter and a child.

Trainer/Coach for children’s basketball team:
As a coach, I was responsible for leading the team, planning and organizing practices, and coaching the game. I learned how to use positive reinforcement and gained leadership skills while teaching the children the fundamentals of the game. I did this with enthusiasm to help motivate the kids while also teaching them the importance of cooperation, teamwork, and sportsmanship. I have learned how to identify and resolve potential conflicts within a group of young children and identifying clear roles for each team member.

Daycare Instructor:
I have worked in a public facility where parents would leave their children to be looked after. I was responsible for children of the ages of 8 months old to 10 years old, looking after about 10 children at one time. Through my work at the Daycare I would encourage a number of activities such as arts and crafts, singing, colouring, board games and computer games. This experience taught me the importance of patience and compassion when looking after young children.

Hostess/Bus-Person:
Communication skills were necessary as my duties were to greet and seat customers, clear and prepare tables, and answer the telephone to write down reservations and take-out orders. I was also in charge of training new employees, directing servers to appropriate tables and keeping the restaurant in an organized manner. Through this experience in customer service I was able to develop my listening and communication skills. I enjoy working with the public and understand the importance of being adaptable and using good judgement.

Grad Committee Member:
I was elected by my grade 12 class to organize our graduation. Throughout the year I represented my class and spoke on their behalf. I worked with the head principle and councillors of my school. We organized tasks such as fundraisers, graduation activities, receptions, ceremonies and speeches. Through this experience I learned the value of preparation and how much work and organization is needed to function a large event.

I have taken French classes, so I know exactly how difficult it is to learn a new language. I find that it is much easier to read and write French but much more difficult to speak it. In contrast, I am from a Portuguese family and I was raised with Portuguese as my second language. I can easily understand and speak Portuguese because my family always exposes me to the language. Because I can speak Portuguese and have studied French, I understand how frustrating it can be to learn a new language. I believe through my experiences with language I can use my knowledge in my classroom when I am teaching English.

I have played team sports throughout my entire life. I have played volleyball, basketball, and rugby. Through sports I have learned how to be a team player, how to be a leader, how to handle difficult situations, and how to achieve goals. I was the captain of my rugby team and through that experience I was a role model for the rest of my team, one that provided encouragement, discipline, and pushed my team to be the best that we could be. These skills that I have developed through playing sports are skills that will definitely benefit me when teaching English in the classroom.

I have my Standard Babysitters Certification and a First Aid Certification from St. John’s Ambulance. These certifications taught me how to respond quickly in a case of an emergency. From these experiences I learned artificial respiration, and choking responses manoeuvres for adults, infants and children while also learning simple procedures such as feeding an infant and disciplinary actions.

I have travelled extensively to a wide variety of countries and have experienced interacting in non-English speaking environments. Through my travels I have developed compassion, open-mindedness and an appreciation of other cultures. Learning about new cultures is something that I am extremely interested in and something I want to take time to learn about.
