Time Medical’s Guide To Effective Resume Presentation

American hospital managers expect a nurse’s resume to be about 2 pages long. It should include very little personal information, and a short listing of education and
experience, with highlights of a few notable skills or awards. It’s best to leave out details of every responsibility or job descriptions.

Our recommended format is on the next page. Some sample statements that might help tell your story are on page 3.

Please email your resume to us. We would be glad to edit and improve your resume before presenting it. If you’re not sure of the best way to mention something,
please ask us for suggestions.

Key things to know
1. The most important information goes near the top
2. Short concise statements are better; Long lists will not be read

What hiring managers are looking for
1. Solid nursing education and experience that indicates good basic nursing skills
2. History of work demonstrating a dependable person
3. Good English language, including professional terms, comprehension and spoken communication
4. Flexibility and a good attitude; A good student who wants to learn more

Positive things to emphasize
1. Type, size and reputation of hospitals where you worked
2. Ability to handle many patients and high patient-to-nurse ratio
3. Evidence of high-tech experience, like names of equipment or types of procedures
4. Good work ethic: dedication, hard working, dependable, loyal

Leave out the Personal information
By law, American companies cannot ask about your family situation, and prefer not to have such information. Do not include a picture, your parents’ names, your
religion, age or birth date, or whether you are married or have children.

Time Medical’s Guide to
Effective Resume Presentation

Recommended format

1. Header
Centered at top in bold. Write only: Your Name, RN and on the next line: Resume

2. Profile
List your degree, key skills, and English language ability in this first section.
Emphasizing a few abilities at the top of the resume increases the impact.

3. License & Credentials
List your current RN license(s) and other credentials or certificates, regardless of the country.
List any nursing association or other professional memberships

4. Education
Nursing Degree and year earned, name and city of the school

5. Work Experience
List the most recent experience first followed by earlier experience. List all positions back to graduation. Include your post-graduation clinical training if you have less
than 3 years nursing experience. Otherwise, leave out the Clinicals.
State your position, the units you were assigned to, and the approximate size of hospitals. Include 3 to 6 short action statements of the type of care you provided
and your responsibilities, showing your skills and variety of experience. Also mention any impressive aspects of the hospital: its reputation, how busy it is (high
number of patients per nurse), etc.

6. Skills
Optional section, to include any skills that were not yet mentioned. It’s better to integrate your skill statements in each “work experience”. However, short entries of
each position followed by a skills section is also effective.

7. Equipment Proficiency
List any medical equipment you know how to use, especially if high-tech or made in the US. You can either list these in the first “work experience” (better if the
equipment is used in the current position), or as a separate section after all work experience entries.

8. References
List 3 to 5 professional references, include their position and contact information

9. Personal
Name, address, email and phone number
