M. S PROJECT: CFD ANALYSIS OF A ROTATING WHEEL AIR CLASSIFIER

The objective is to obtain the flow field in a typical rotating wheel air classifier using CFD and flow visualization studies and to study the effect of process and design variables such as rpm, feed rate and type of vanes on the classification process. A full three dimensional model was created using GAMBIT. FLUENT5 was used as a solver. Eulerian-Lagrangian approach is used to solve this problem of turbulent dispersed multiphase gas-solids flow. The flow field corresponding to the airflow was calculated using Moving reference frame model. Standard k- model was used for turbulence modelling. Discrete phase model was used for calculating particle trajectories and stochastic model for the influence of turbulence velocity fluctuations. Experiments have been carried out for validation and the results were compared and found to be consistent.
