Strength And Skills:
1). Develop an on site microbiology program for testing raw materials, water environment (compressed air, manufacturing lab surfaces, and lab air) and finished products at the facility.
2). Prepare media, take aseptic samples, pour plates, make dilutions, perform routine microbiological test procedures and operate autoclaves and other standard lab equipment.
3). Understand and use basic aseptic technique, precautions in handling potentially infectious materials, proper disposable materials.
4). Maintenance of standard microbial cultures, media validation and growth promotion test.
5). Understand and precisely follow written microbiological procedures, methods, and publish standard methods.
6). Interpret intermediate test results and identify isolates of organisms recovered from test materials.
7). Conduct process sampling and choose appropriate procedures for identifying isolates from these samples. Devise and execute a program of routine problem resolution.
8). Coach and train facility personnel and laboratory staff in microbiological issues, risk avoidance, asepsis and good microbiological housekeeping.
9). Responsible for verifying the equipment and interpreting results.

Project Profile:
Title: ISOLATION OF PECTINASE PRODUCING BACTERIA
AND THEIR ROLE IN CLEARING APPLE JUICE
Duration : One year (Project Handled in M.Sc Final Year).
Description: Pectin is a heteropolysaccharide with galacturonic acid and methanol as the main component. Pectin substances are wide spread in plant kingdom and they are present in the plant cell wall. Pectinase is an enzyme which degrades pectin. It has a unique feature of clarifying turbid and viscous Apple juice and increases the juice yield.
In the present work, different organisms were isolated from soil of cauliflower
plantation. The isolates identified were Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus stereothermophilus,
Bacillus subtilus and Pseudomonas fluorescence. They were further used for the
production of pectinase enzyme. Produced enzyme was estimated by viscosity
determination method. Bacillus subtilus showed highest reduction in viscosity of the
substrate i.e., pectin by solid state fermentation and Bacillus pumilus by sub-merged
fermentation. In the clarification of Apple juice again Bacillus subtilus and Bacillus
pumilus gave highest yield of clear apple juice through solid state fermentation and
sub-merged fermentation respectively.
