 B.Sc., GEOLOGY PROGRAMME

Three years Bachelor of Science in Geology Programme completed at Government Arts College for Men at Salem. During 1997-2000 academic programme the basic geological subjects are studied. As a part of the academic studies two weeks intensive geological investigations of sedimentary terrain, field training obtained during UG second year programme at Cretaceous sedimentary basin analysis at Ariyalur, Quaternary geological studies at Pondicherry and Tertiary Formations and Lignite deposits of Neyveli basin and Economic deposits like Iron, Bauxite, Magnesite exploration and mining sites in Salem district. During this assignment of the UG programme I have been trained in field data collections for exploration of economic deposits, Quarry blasting techniques, deposits assay, field mapping of ore deposits, paleoenvironmental evidences and its role in fossil fuel studies.

Further, fifteen days intensive geological field training obtained during UG third year programme at Andhra Pradesh. This assignment, gave me the confidence in field Survey at open cast mine, mine planning, ore reserve estimation and engineering properties of rocks. This integrated study at UG prompted me to master in geological sciences.

 M.Sc., APPLIED GEOLOGY PROGRAMME

The Master of Science in Applied Geology degree obtained from Centre of Geoscience and Engineering, Anna University, Chennai. The Applied Geology programme has given me the geological sciences and its application in mineral-based industries and socio economical projects. .

During the M.Sc., Applied Geology programme the special science and technology integrated courses study like Statistics and Computer Applications, Exploration Geophysics, Engineering Geology, Environmental Geology, Mining Geology, Remote Sensing, Industrial Geology, Sequence Stratigraphy, Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Sedimentology, Geomorphology, Exploration Stratigraphy, Economic Micropaleontology, Economic Geology, Nuclear and Isotope Geology, and Quaternary Geology. Besides, I have undergone Four weeks Industrial training at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Chennai and Karaikal-Neravi.

Industrial Training

I underwent first two weeks training programme at ONGC, Karaikal. I was at trained at Thiruvarur well site. During this programme I got trained at Field geology lab, Mud logging unit and Geochemistry lab. In the field I was thought various Geological and Geophysical exploration works, Preparation of Geotechnical order, Well construction concepts, Fundamentals of drilling, equipments and operation, Well logging, Preparation of Isopach maps, Core packing and Mud control parameters.

Further two weeks training programme continued at ONGC, Regional Geology Lab, Chennai which included Lab works like Paleontology lab, Palynology lab, Sedimentology lab and Geochemistry lab. In the Paleontology lab I learnt to process the deep core samples, sorting under microscope and foraminiferal separation works and identification of species. In the palynology lab I learnt to process the deep core samples, preparation of thin section slides of palyno fossils to study under microscope. In the Sedimentology lab I was thought to do Visual Interpretation of sediments, Grain size analysis to interpret the depositional environment and thin section petrographical studies of core thin sections. In the geochemistry lab I learned the techniques involved in doing Total Organic Content studies.

 M.Sc., PROJECT WORK

The geological research advancement in India and other countries has been figured in National and International geological journals and web sites. The geological studies in M.Sc., Programme, where , I have learnt the Geological applications and data process into the Industrial implementations. The role of Geology in Industry is enormous, the scientific process translation to industry is Applied Geology. The fundamental geology discipline is stratigraphy or Historical Geology, where in this science speaks on strata evolution with time and architecture of our landscape through geological time and space. The pioneer contributions of our great geoscientists on Sedimentary basins of India mark the mile stone for further research and utility of the thoughts. In this direction the exploration stratigraphy is one of the branch in geology, figures the key role in mineral and fossil fuel explorations. The sequence stratigraphy is the new science, which provides the precise and predictive concepts of sedimentary basin.

This advancement and applications of Sequence stratigraphy prompted me to choose the sixteen weeks duration project on “ Sequence Stratigraphy And Biozonation Of Late Maastrichtian And Paleocene Sediments Of Well NY-B And Microfacies Studies Of Melarasur Limestone Quarry, Ariyalur-Pondicheery Sub-Basin, Tamil Nadu”.

Salient features of the project work

The project work attempted to study the sequence stratigraphy, foraminiferal biozonation and paleobathymetry of late cretaceous sediments of well NY- B and microfacies study of melarasur limestone. From the Temporal distribution and frequency distribution study and paleobathymetry studies of Well NY-B, eight biozones has been identified based on the occurrence of planktic foraminifers and other sequence stratigraphic surfaces like Low systems tract, Transgressive systems tracts, High systems tract and Maximum flooding surfaces are identified. Further microfacies and Total Organic Content studies were carried out on outcrop limestone samples of Melarasur.

ABSTRACT OF MY PROJECT WORK
This project work attempts to study the sequence stratigraphy, foraminiferal Biozonation, and Palaeobathymetry, Late Cretaceous sediments of Well NY-B and microfacies study of Melarasur limestone.

In well NY-B, Using Planktic foraminiferal assemblage eight biozones are recognized: Gansserina gansseri, Abathamphalus mayaroensis, Globotruncana stuarti, Eoglobiberina eubulloides ,Globotruncana daubjergensis, Morozovella angulata,Planorotalites pseudomenardii and Marozovella aequa zone respectively.

Based on the foraminiferal frequency three - III order sequences bounded by three sequence boundaries at Sequence-I (1500 m -1420 m), Sequence-II (1420 m-1360 m) and Sequence - III (1360 - 1350 m (?)) were identified respectively.

Two maximum flooding surfaces at the depth of 1455 m and 1360 m depth respectively, are also demarcated. Two Transgressive Systems Tracts (TST- I and TST- II) in the depth interval from 1495 m-1455 m and 1420 m– 1365 m , two Highstand Systems Tract (HST -I and HST -II) between 1455 m -1420 m and 1365-1350m- (?) depth were identified respectively.

Melarasur limestone(outcrop) microfacies study inferred that the Melarasur limestones are Packstones and are deposited under medium-energy condition.

The Total Organic Carbon (TOC) values infer good oxic condition prevailed during the deposition of limestones and it has very poor organic content.
