PORTFOLIO
My institution (Oct1996- Aug2000), B.S. college of physiotherapy , chennai, India, where I got trained as physiotherapist was a 2000 bedded super specialty hospital based institution which occupied rural and urban population together with almost all rare kinds of pathologies exposed to its students. The institution is in academic collaboration with Harvard Medical International USA, and University Of South Australia, Australia, which could reflect the standards of the institution.
The program facilitated my ability to undertake a critical analysis of theories of physiotherapy and to question and re-examine many professional convictions. The outcome of this learning experience enabled for the development of my knowledge and skills to be both innovative and evaluative in my workplace. Five clinical routes were offered in the areas of:
Neurology
Pediatrics
Musculo-skeletal
Cardio respiratory
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
During my internship period my patient exposure was double folded and I was packed with less time to spend on research and knowledge. Immediately after my intern ship, I got an excellent opportunity to work under the supervision of one of the leading physiotherapists of the town. Mr.Shanmuga Rajan, founder of Raj Physio Care and Rehabilitation Centre, Chennai, himself being a well-established physiotherapist, gave me enough independence and thus confidence by his support to assess, plan, and execute my way of physiotherapeutic approaches. Mr.Shanmuga Rajan was in good association with the “The spastics society of Tamil Nadu” (organization rendering health service for brain damaged population), by which he managed to increase the quality of neurological service provided by us, thus enabling me to get more involved in neurological management principles. Students from various collages started to come for their clinical practice on regular basis. During this period, I had to explain the complex medical conditions, physiotherapy role, and techniques to be selected in a simpler way and also with proper evidence to students. This enormously improved my skills in educating, counseling and searching of evidences for my practice.
I decided to update my knowledge to international level and thus updated my knowledge I have completed Quantitative research methods from Auckland University Of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand.
The Neurophysiology has sharpened my skills to analyze neural mechanisms involved in the control of voluntary movement and perception of sensation. It also enabled me to evaluate the neural responses to clinical interventions and the potential effects of these interventions on the processing of neural information.
The inputs on professional ethics, medico legal issues, health economics, public health and communication skills in Professional practice have been broadened my outlook as physiotherapist. Also it enabled me to analyze professional practice from a personal, inter-professional and bicultural perspective.
The clinical placement in Auckland University Of Technology has oriented me to physical therapy assessment and management trends in New Zealand.
