EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY, Noordwijk, The Netherlands (March 87-June 96).
POSITION: Design/Development Engineer.
Conducted Test Campaign at Harris Space Systems to assess Fiber Optic Communication Technology(digital/analogue and various data coding techniques) used on board NASA’s Space Station. Generated Final Report to advise to advise ESA on compatibility, integration and feasibility of implementation on board the ESA’s Columbus manned Space Module.
Designed fully automated Fiber Optic Test Bed to route digital and video using PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) format. Test Bed supported multi-standard video formats(NTSC, PAL, Secam) with optical attenuation of 20 db’s while still maintaining eia-250-c satellite standard.
The architecture will be used on ESA’s Space Station. Given award by ESA for design.
Designed and developed operational hardware for low noise micro-gravity measurement system used during ESA’s parabolic measurement campaign.
Interface directly with European Space industry to control, advise and monitor the status of ESA related contracts.
Support and advise ESA scientists and Payload specialists during testing and integration of Space Qualified Hardware.
Assigned to Tenerife, Spain(Jan 95 - July 96) as ESA’s on site representative to assist and co-ordinate the integration of an Optical Ground Station. This station provided the means to establish Space to Ground (and vice versa ) laser communications to Geo-Stationary Satellites.
Conducted free space laser communication link between two islands in the Canaries over a 145 km distance. Extrapolated test results to atmospheric model predictions.
Designed and implemented the Communication Subsystem for the Optical Ground Station. The system checked out the received laser payload signal from the ESA Spacecraft Artemis in terms of Bit Error Rate and Jitter. The components consisted a sensitive avalanche photo detector with low noise amplifier followed by an automatic gain controller( to compensate atmospheric fluctuations). the electrical signal was then separated into clock and data for analysis.
