The Technical Director of the Systems Engineering for Lucent's Advanced Wireless Technical Center in Yokohama, Japan will lead two Technical Managers who each lead a group of Systems Engineers. The Systems Engineering groups will define the high level requirements for the design of the Third Generation Wideband CDMA wireless system being designed for NTT DoCoMo.

Key elements of the System are the Base Transceiver Station (BTS), the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and Multimedia Processing Element (MPE). The BTS is the equipment that transmits and receives the radio waves used between an end user's mobile station and the wireless network. It involves digital transmission to and from the telephone network. The Radio Network Controller is a Network Element that is used in a wireless network to control the Base Transceiver Stations, connecting them to the access portion of the network. The Multimedia Processing Element is a Network Element that is used to convert the data/voice/video protocols between those used in wireless transmission and those used in the remainder of the telecommunications network.

The Systems Engineering Organization includes a BTS Systems Engineering group and an RNC/MPE Systems Engineering group.

The Systems Engineers interface with the customer in many ways: through regularly scheduled formal technical meetings; smaller, less formal meetings; and by receiving written documents from the customer. One of the main responsibilities of the Systems Engineers are to take the information received from the customer and produce, as part of a team, the System Requirements that are used by the design teams to design BTS, RNC and MPE. The Systems Engineers interact with the design teams to make sure that the intent of the System Requirements and customer documents are understood. The Systems Engineers also negotiate the technical definitions of the system with the customer based upon the feedback from the design teams; it is necessary to describe the designs in a way that assures the customer that their specifications, and those of the appropriate standards bodies, will be met by the Lucent Technologies' designs.

The candidate should have an appropriate experience and educational background. Required is a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or an appropriate equivalent field; a Master's degree or PhD is helpful. The candidate should have technical managerial experience in one or more of the following areas: wireless systems design; radio systems design; or RF systems design; switching systems design; data telecommunications systems; or data protocols.
