RESIDENT DIRECTOR
JAPAN CENTER FOR MICHIGAN UNIVERSITIES (JCMU)
Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
Duties
The Resident Director is primarily responsible for managing and administering the JCMU academic programs, including supervision of students, staff, and faculty, and managing and administering the day-to-day operation of the Center, including the budget. Other duties include teaching one course entitled Japanese Culture and Society, representing the JCMU consortium in public functions, and maintaining communications with relevant Japanese and American associates. JCMU is administered by the Office of the Dean of International Studies and Programs at Michigan State University (MSU), on behalf of the State of Michigan and its fifteen public universities, and in cooperation with Shiga Prefecture. JCMU operates in facilities owned by the Prefecture on the shore of Lake Biwa, in the town of Hikone, approximately one hour from Kyoto. Period of Appointment
This is a full-time, annually renewable position with an anticipated start date no later than August 1, 2002. Appointment is through Michigan State University.
Required Qualifications and Competencies
These include:
· Master’s degree with Japan specialization.
· Experience in teaching about Japanese culture and society.
· Administrative experience (including strong organizational skills; ability to coordinate academic programs; supervision of faculty, staff, and students).
· Working proficiency in the spoken and written use of the Japanese and English languages.
· Ability to work cooperatively and decisively within an organization encompassing two cultures and several institutions.
Preferred Qualifications and Competencies
These include:
· Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
· Previous experience in the administration of a study abroad program designed for American students.
· High degree of proficiency in the spoken and written use of the Japanese and English languages.
· Evidence of Japan-related scholarship.
· Familiarity with the public universities of Michigan.
