CARER/ASSISTANT CARER/NURSE WANTED

I am looking for a kind considerate person to help me look after my seriously ill wife. She is 63 years old and is in advanced stages of Multiple Systems Atrophy (Striato Nigral Degeneration), a rare form of Parkinson’s Disease. She is quite disabled but mentally very bright and alert.

We live in a quiet street in Glen Waverley, an outer suburb of Melbourne, very close to all amenities. The house has been adapted to cater for a disabled person and I have all the equipment necessary to assist me and my helpers.

Ideally I would like someone who is prepared to live-in but will also talk with people who are available on a daily basis. The work is not difficult but it is time consuming. There is plenty of free time for people to do other things.

I am prepared to pay for services subject to skills, experience and value to me as the primary Carer. I am not able to pay top commercial rates for a full time person.

The person or persons I am looking for are ideally female (because of the personal nature of the work), of mature age (or though not essential) and not be overly restricted by other ties. A nursing background is very useful although not essential. A current driver’s licence is desirable. Race, religion or colour is NOT a barrier.

My wife is a very respected and well liked person and has many visitors, most of whom say that they get more from their visits than they give. She is a graduate, an ex teacher and public servant. She is an avid reader and listens to classical music. She is a strong Christian of the catholic persuasion and her faith is one of her strongest assets. She accepts her illness and rarely complains about it.

I am 60 years old and have taken early retirement from my job as an IT professional to care for my wife. My wife’s visitors seem to think that I am a pleasant sort of cove who looks after his sick wife as well as he can.

I am at the stage now where I can no longer look after her without considerable help. I do have help at the moment, but I am always striving to improve that help. The better the quality of the assistance, the better it is for my wife. At the moment, she goes into Bethlehem Hospital every eight weeks for two weeks respite care and assessments. It is my hope that any new Carers will assist in visiting her while she is there to reduce the possibility of anxiety, which is a by product of the illness.
