Job Description

Engineer
General Characteristics
As a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of the subject matter of the functional area of the assignments, plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Requires sufficient professional experience to assure competence as a fully trained worker, completion of all requirements for a post graduate degree (eg M sc. Or PhD)degree may be substituted for experience.
A well-rounded electrical engineering knowledge base, capable of working in, or at least having some familiarity with, most aspects of electrical and electro-optic systems. Among these aspects are :
1. A firm understanding of basic electrical and electronic principles;
2. A firm understanding of high and low power analog, and digital electronic circuits;
3. Reasonable level of basic manufacturing skills, including PCB population (conventional and surface-mount), wiring, and system assembly;
4. Proficiency in schematic capturing and printed circuit board layout;
5. Proficiency in the design of programmable logic devices (PLDs);
6. Proficiency in several major software languages, including ANSII and Turbo C, Turbo Pascal, Assembler, and Quick BASIC;
7. Detailed understanding of microprocessor controlled systems;
8. Ability to use basic measurement tools, such as multimeters and oscilloscopes, to perform faultfinding on circuits and systems;
9. Ability to repair electrical circuits and systems, with the aid of circuit diagrams;
10. A basic understanding of the physics of lasers;
11. A firm understanding of basic optical systems;
12. An appreciation of the interaction between electrical, optical, and mechanical sub-systems;
13. An appreciation of the cost and time required for a design;
14. The ability to obtain and send information via the Internet;
15. Familiarity with AS 3200 : Approval and test specification- Medical electrical equipment;
16. A professional level of technical documentation skills;
17. A professional level of interpersonal communication skills;
The employee must have a professional demeanor, telephone manner, dress sense, and set of ethics, as well as a healthy sense of humor, where appropriate.

Direction Received
Independently performs most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and a good knowledge of and practices of related specialties.
Responsibility for Direction of Others
May supervise or coordinate the work of engineers, drafters, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.
Education
Minimum requirement Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an accredited curriculum, or equivalent.
Recommended Salary Range
Salary base rate of $40,000 negotiable
