They should be subjected to investigation by Indonesian military court and not the UN. The UN will have little interest in keeping the rest of the Indonesian military clean. In fact, they may all serve sentences in military stockade then discharged from service. These are not only crimes against East Timor but crimes against Indonesia -- their actions have definitely set back Indonesia's development by several decades. Indonesian top brass should also be probed by the civilian government / parliament for conspiracy and incompetence. The security in East Timor was Indonesia's responsibility. Indonesia should seriously evaluate the capabilities of it's military top brass to avoid this happening in other territories. We should remember, security in Jakarta was also compromised in last year's riots but the same officials are still there. If these people are not replaced, this could happen again and more Indonesians can die. |
