"In Bacau, a memorial service was held Tuesday for nine people, mostly Roman Catholic clergy, who were shot dead while on an aid mission to East Timorese refugees.

The bodies of two nuns, three deacons, two teen-age girls, a journalist and a driver were found over the weekend in a stream near the town of Lospalos. They were returning to Bacau from Lospalos, where they had delivered food and medicine, when the attack took place.

Bacau's bishop, Basilio das Nacimento, blamed the militias for the murders.

"I don't know why they killed our people," he said after the service in Bacau's cemetery. "People are very upset and angry over this killing."
