Look. yes. we are a hegemony. Sure. Also we are a military power and have extensive deployment. So accidents happen. But there is nothing to gain for us by provoking the Chinese. Lose trade with them? China has great ambitions: If you read some of these posts, you can see that they expect to dominate their area and have their sphere of influence in a few decades. And rightly so. They deserve it, are a great energetic nation etc... And they were wronged by us on Taiwan: Kissinger went back on his word to leave the Taiwan issue be - we then passed the Taiwan relations act. So they have a legitimate grievance. However, the WTO for example is a club with rules... as much as I don't like them, membership and the status that it brings comes with strings attached. Human rights violations are rampant in China. Tiamen Square, falun gong, their imperialistic treatment of tibet, etc... Plus their economic policies are not in line with WTO membership requirements... but they say: Let us in and then change the rules for us. I know about French nationalism, I lived in Germany and Austria til i was 18... The trouble is though, that what I have seen on this site and heard from chinese aquaintances is a kind of blind patriotism that I (having grown up in Germany) find very, very disturbing.
